THE TOPIC FOR THIS YEAR'S CONTEST WAS WRITE ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE PART OF EDMOND AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU.
WE RECEIVED OVER A HUNDRED TOTAL ESSAYS THIS YEAR.
ONE SAID THAT THEIR FAVORITE PART OF EDMOND WAS BEST OF BOOKS WHERE THE BOOKS SMELL LIKE THEY'RE NINE YEARS OLD.
THEY ENJOYED GOING TO THE POND, PRACTICING SOCCER AND GOING UP AND DOWN THE SLIDE, ONE STUDENT SAID THEY LOVE DOWNTOWN.
EDMOND HEARD ON HEARD BLUEBIRD BOOKS AND EMPIRE SLICE MAKES THEIR FAVORITE PLACE TO HAVE FUN AND SPENDING TIME WITH FAMILY.
THE FRIED TACO IS ONE STUDENT'S FAVORITE PLACE.
NOT ONLY IS IT THEIR FAVORITE FOOD, BUT THERE'S FOOD IS AMAZING, BUT THEY PLAY AREA OUTSIDE IN THE ICE HOUSE.
MAKES IT PERFECT PLACE FOR FOOD AND GAMES.
AND THE OTHER STUDENT SAID, MITCH PARK IN EDMOND WAS ANOTHER, UM, WAS ANOTHER OTHER FAVORITE PLACES.
TENT TOBER IS A SPECIAL EVENT TO WHICH THERE'VE BEEN AT EVERYONE SINCE 2018.
IN THEIR WORDS, MITCH PARK IS THE BEST PLACE EVER.
SO WHAT WE DID EARLIER, WE, I TOOK INDIVIDUAL PICTURES WITH EACH OF THE FIRST PLACE WINNERS OUTSIDE.

THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY IS ICONIC NORTH AMERICAN SPECIES WHOSE MULTI-GENERATIONAL MIGRATION AND METAMORPHOSIS FROM CATERPILLAR TO BUTTERFLY, HAS CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF MILLIONS OF AMERICANS.
COUNCILMAN MEMORIAL, MY AND MY, THIS IS ONE OF OUR, OUR LOVES.
20 YEARS AGO, MORE THAN 1 BILLION EASTERN MONARCH BUTTERFLIES MIGRATED TO MEXICO.
BUT IN THE WINTER OF 2014, ONLY 60 MILLION MADE THE TRIP.
CITIES, TOWNS AND UH, COUNTIES HAVE A CRUCIAL CRITICAL ROLE TO PLAY TO HELP SAVE THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY.
AND THE CITY OF EDMOND HAS PLAYED A LEADERSHIP ROLE BY OFFERING A PROGRAM IN THE FALL CALLED BECOME A POLLINATOR HERO.
MONARCH TAGGING EVERY CITIZEN OF EBONY CAN TAKE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE MONARCH BY PLANTING NATIVE MILKWEED AND NECTAR PLANTS TO PROVIDE HABITAT FOR THE MONARCH AND POLLINATORS IN LOCATIONS WHERE PEOPLE LIVE, WORK, LEARN, PLAY, AND WORSHIP.

CONSTRUCTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN THIS FALL.
THE ESTIMATED $9.7 MILLION CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS RECEIVING $7.4 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 70% OF THE 76% OF THE CONSTRUCTION COST.
UH, THIS FEDERAL GRANT IS A SURFACE TRANSPORTATION BLOCK GRANT THROUGH THE EDMONDS PARTICIPATION IN THE ASSOCIATION OF CENTRAL OKLAHOMA GOVERNMENTS.
IT IS A PRIMARY WAY FOR THE CITY TO BRING BACK FEDERAL DOLLARS TO THE CITY OF EDMOND, OKLAHOMA, DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION OVERSEAS CONSTRUCTION.
DUE TO FEDERAL FUNDS BEING UTILIZED.
UH, THE CHANGE IN EDMOND'S SHARE IS RELATED TO CONSTRUCTION COST INFLATION, WHICH HAS BEEN BEYOND EXPECTATION IN RECENT YEARS.

WE WENT OUT ON THE 12TH, MADE OBSERVATIONS, OPENED A CASE, DID A REINSPECTION ON THE 14TH, AND THE PROPERTY HAD FAILED TO COMPLY AT THAT TIME.
THE FIRST PHOTOGRAPHS THAT YOU SEE HERE ARE THE DECLINE THAT WE NOTED ON THE SEVENTH.
WE SPOKE WITH THE, UH, PERSON THAT WAS AT THE PROPERTY AND WE, WE WERE TOLD THAT, HEY, HE HAD TO TAKE A LOT OF THE STUFF OUT OF THE TRUCK.
THERE WAS SOME MECHANICAL REPAIR THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE TO THE TRUCK.
SO HE WAS TAKING THINGS OUT OF THE TRUCK AND PUTTING THEM ON THE GROUND SO HE COULD MAKE THE REPAIR.
AND THEY ASSURED US THAT THAT WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF.
AND IT DIDN'T, IT, IT JUST DIDN'T GET TAKEN CARE OF.
WE WENT BY THERE ON THE, LIKE I SAID, WE GOT THE SERVICE REQUEST ON THE 11TH.

THAT'S WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED BY THE, UH, CITY OF EDMOND POLICE DEPARTMENT.
HE IS INCARCERATED, UM, PRESENTLY AT THE OKLAHOMA COUNTY JAIL AND WILL BE, UH, UH, DOING A PROGRAM CALLED LIFE OR, UH, FIRST STEP DOWN IN THE NORMAN AREA.
HE'S NOT ABLE TO LEAVE THE FACILITY EXCEPT TO GO TO WORK AND COME BACK, AND HE WILL BE THERE BETWEEN SIX MONTHS AND TWO YEARS.
AND THEN, DEPENDING ON HOW HE COMPLETES THE PROGRAM, UH, HE MAY BE THERE FOR UP TO FIVE YEARS.
UM, SO HE, HE WILL NOT BE COMING BACK TO THE PROPERTY AT ALL.
UM, SO THAT'S KIND OF WHERE WE STAND WITH, WITH HIS SITUATION.

THEY HAVE SO MANY NEW, GREAT IDEAS THAT ARE GONNA BE HAPPENING.
AND THIS, UH, THIS YEAR AND THE FOLLOWING YEARS TO COME, THEY'RE STILL ALSO OPEN ON WEDNESDAYS OUT AT THE, UH, MAC CENTER.
SO, UM, EVERYBODY GO DOWN THERE AND GET ALL YOUR FUN STUFF.
A COUPLE SATURDAYS AGO, UM, URBAN FORESTRY HELD A TREE PLANTING IN HAYFORD PARK.
AND, AND WE TALKED ABOUT IT, THE, THE WEEK LEADING UP TO IT.
BUT, UM, THAT SAME MORNING WE DEDICATED THE CHARLES LAND NATURE PRESERVE.
BUT I WENT BACK BY TO, UM, TO THE TREE PLANTING AND WAS ABLE TO TALK TO SOME OF THE VOLUNTEERS.
AND I ASKED THEM, WHAT MADE YOU WANNA HURT YOUR BACK TO PLANT THE TREES? MM-HMM
AND, UM, I HEARD FROM A COUPLE OF THEM THAT THEY SAID, WELL, THIS IS MY PARK.
AND I WANT IT TO BE BEAUTIFUL, AND I WANNA TAKE CARE OF IT.
AND I THINK THAT'S JUST A REALLY ENCOURAGING, UM, SPIRIT THAT WE ALL HAVE SHARED FATE IN OUR PARKS MM-HMM
AND WE, WE GET TO ENJOY THEM TOGETHER AND REALLY APPRECIATE THOSE VOLUNTEERS AND URBAN FORESTRY AND OTHER STAFF MEMBERS FOR ALL THEIR WORK THAT DAY.
